A Quantitative Fractionation of Tissue Ferritin and Hemosiderin*
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ferritin and hemosiderin are two forms of storage iron of strikingly similar chemical and physical characteristics (1). Ferritin is present in dispersed form. within the cell, while hemosiderin is present as insoluble particles which are visible microscopically. The separation of these subst.ances has not been heretofore performed on a quantitative scale, although methods for the extraction of ferritin (14) and a qualitative separation of the two iron-protein compounds (5) have been reported. The present study was designed to separate and distinguish quantitatively rabbit and human ferritin, hemosiderin, and hemoglobin and to determine quantitatively rabbit ferritin by an immunochemical technique.

The Nature of Storage Iron in Idiopathic Hemochromatosis and in Hemosiderosis
Using three different methods of cells fractionation, hemosiderin granules were isolated from tissues (liver and/or spleen) of three patients. The samples were obtained from a case of idiopathic hemochromatosis, a case of thalassemia major with secondary (transfusional?) hemosiderosis, and a case of transfusional hemosiderosis associated with an unclassified anemia. Iron, nitrogen, and protein ...
متن کاملTissue Iron Detection & Quantification with MRI
Endogenous tissue iron, other than that in blood, occurs primarily in two MRI detectable forms: ferritin iron and hemosiderin iron [1]. Ferritin is a water soluble protein with an iron core and is the body’s main iron storage protein. Hemosiderin iron is water insoluble and consists largely of ferrihydrite. Ferritin may either be diffusely dispersed or localized in specific cells, depending on ...
متن کاملTransformation rate between ferritin and hemosiderin assayed by serum ferritin kinetics in patients with normal iron stores and iron overload
Ferritin iron, hemosiderin iron, total iron stores and transformation rate were determined by serum ferritin kinetics. The transformation rate between ferritin and hemosiderin is motivated by the potential difference between them. The transformer determines transformation rate according to the potential difference in iron mobilization and deposition. The correlations between transformation rate...
متن کاملA STUDY OF HEMOSIDEROSIS WITH THE AID OF ELECTRON MICROSCOPY WITH OBSERVATIONS ON ".rtit~ R_ELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEMOSIDERIN AND FERRITIN * BY GOETZ
Although hemosiderosis develops in many circumstances (1) in man and animals, and though hemosiderin has long been recognized as an important product of iron metabolism, the formation and structure of hemosiderin in tissues have not as yet been elucidated at fine structure levels. In recent years numerous studies have indicated a close chemical relationship between the iron storage compound fer...
متن کاملIncreasing and Decreasing Phases of Ferritin and Hemosiderin Iron Determined by Serum Ferritin Kinetics
We attempted to clarify the mechanism of the storage iron metabolism. A new program of serum ferritin kinetics was applied for studying the increasing and decreasing phases of ferritin and hemosiderin iron in iron addition and removal in patients with a normal level of iron stores or iron overload. The change of ferritin iron in response to iron addition and removal was rapid in the initial sta...
